Abstract

In ecological wood anatomy we study the ecological relationships between different environments in respect to wood anatomy recognizing thus ecological wood trends. These studies demonstrate how the environmental factors guide these trends. Cerrado, and caatinga are Brazilian phytogeographic domains which differ mainly in relation to latitude, temperature and water availability. Thus, our aim is to compare the wood anatomy of Tabebuia aurea (Bignoniaceae) and Tocoyena formosa (Rubiaceae), both occurring in the cerrado of São Paulo and in the caatinga of Paraíba to compare the anatomical differences, and to identify if the individuals from caatinga show a higher degree of xeromorphism. The areas of study are "Reserva Particular de Cerrado Palmeira da Serra" in Pratânia municipality, São Paulo state, and São João do Cariri municipality, and Serra Branca, municipality,Paraiba state. Soil samples will be collected for physical and chemical analyzes. Samples of wood from six adult individuals of each species were collected. We will use usual techniques in wood anatomy for the permanent and provisory slides, and we will prepare samples for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). For the qualitative and quantitative analyzes we will follow the recommendations of the IAWA Committee (1989). Non-parametrical multivariate analyzes of variance will be used to test if there are differences in the wood anatomy of individuals from different enviroments. With our results, we are expanding the knowledge of ecological trends in wood anatomy.
