Introduction: Mucociliary clearance is an important defense mechanism of the respiratory tract that is influenced by the external environment such as exposure to smoke and execution of exercises. Aims: To evaluate and to compare the acute response's behavior of mucociliary clearance and autonomic modulation of smokers and nonsmokers toward moderate aerobic exercise, as well as to investigate possible correlations among these variables. To verify the influence of the acute smoking and its association with exercise in response of smokers' mucociliary clearance and autonomic modulation. Methods: Smokers with normal lung function will be evaluated concerning the mucociliary clearance by saccharin transit time (STT) and autonomic nervous system activity by heart rate variability (HRV) in four stages: at baseline, without exercise or smoking stimuli; after moderate aerobic exercise and after smoking; after moderate aerobic exercise at abstinence and at rest immediately after smoking. For comparison of baseline and the effect of exercise, will be assessed a nonsmoker control group with similar characteristics. This group will not be exposed to smoking. Statistical analysis: The Graphpad Prism statistical program will be used. The normal distribution of data will be assessed by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and description of the results will be held as mean ± standard deviation, except for variables with non-normal distribution, with will be described as median (interquartile range 25-75). For intergroup analysis will be used the unpaired t test or Mann-Withney test. For analysis of the moments will be used analysis of variance for repeated measures ANOVA followed by Tukey test or the Friedman test followed by Dunn's test. Correlations will be evaluated using the Pearson or Sperman coefficients. The choice of tests will depend on the normal distribution of data. Differences were considered significant at P < 0,05.
