Abstract

Due to competition with the long-life milk, goat milk producers in the state of São Paulo are being forced to adopt more efficient production systems. The confinement system, by offering forages in the trough, is being replaced at least part of the day, to use pastures, but the high nutritional requirements of dairy breeds require a concentrate supplementation. However, the use of corn and soybeans in the concentrate ration enhances the final product due to the fluctuating price of these products in the international market. An alternative for producers of goat milk, which are almost entirely small producers, would be the use of food that could be produced and stored on the property, fleeing the dependence of grains. Thus, cassava instead of corn and grazing alfalfa in place of soybean meal, may be used to meet the energy and protein requirements, respectively, dairy livestock. The objective of this research will be to evaluate the substitution of corn and soybean meal in the concentrate by cassava meal and the alfalfa grazing, respectively, either alone or concomitantly in Alpine goats feeding on characteristics: production and milk composition, dry matter intake, weight and body condition score, fatty acid profile of milk, ingestive behavior during the grazing, ruminal parameters and production costs.
