Abstract

Laetacara araguaiae is a South American Cichlidae that was recently described by OTTONI & COSTA (2009), which together with other species of the genre, is considered as ornamental fish, due it high, colors diversity and beautifulness, which are attractive for small and great aquarists. The knowledge of the gonadal histologic characteristic compose a basic and primordial step for the comprehension of the natural reproduction in fish and the identification and characterization of the germ cells during the oogenesis, allow imply about the gonad functional stage on the determination of the species reproductive period. Females of Laetacara araguaiae are being collect since April 2012 to March 2013 in the Dois Córregos River (S 20º 25' 00.5" W 051º 28' 38.4''. Alt: 329m), Véstia, Selvíria - MS. It total length and total weight are measure, it gonads are remove, weighted, fragmented, fixed and process to transmission electronic microscopy and light microscopy. So, considering that the recent described species, exampling Laetacara araguaiae, constitute a very vulnerable group to its habitat degradation, it is necessary studies that provide basic answers for reproduction, preservation and management questions. Therefore, it is intended to realize the morphologic characterization of the female reproductive cycle and the ultrastructural analyze of Laetacara araguaiae oogenesis, as well the first maturation size and the reproduction type, because the knowledge about the basics studies of the reproductive biology is the first point to its application in the aquiculture and other correlated areas, like behavior and ecology.
