Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome caused by lack of insulin production by pancreatic beta cells or by defective insulin receptors on target cells, resulting in hyperglycemic metabolic disease. When associated with pregnancy, diabetes causes maternal and fetal complications, maternal hyperglycemia stimulates fetal growth (macrosomia), all due to the greater availability of glucose in the blood flow and the regulation of growth factors. The high weight at birth is associated with the risk of developing insulin resistance, obesity and type 2 diabetes in adults. Diabetes also affects the male reproductive system, especially the accessory sex glands and gonads. Although vast publications have verified the effects of diabetes on testicular function and fertility in males, the impact of gestational diabetes on the morphogenesis and growth of prostate male offspring is still limited. Given the clinical relevance of the subject, the aim of this project is to evaluate the possible effects of gestational diabetes on morphologic features of epithelial and stromal compartments of the prostate gland. For this will be investigated the effects of gestational diabetes mellitus type 1 on histoarchitecture ventral lobe of the prostate at puberty and adulthood, analyzing the morphology and morphometry of the alveoli and prostatic smooth muscle fibers that surround the location and distribution of fibroblasts, and vascular area prostatic extracellular matrix. Cytochemical analyzes are made, morphometric, immunocytochemical, western blotting, in males at 60 and 120 days old, seeking a better understanding of the effects of gestational diabetes on the prostate. This IC design is part of a larger project Master FAPESP (Process 2011/16522-0) and complements the master's project with exclusive analysis.(AU)
