Abstract Raymond Williams represents, surely, one of the most important references with regard to the treatment of the subject of culture, both in their specific training (especially literature and theater) and as a component of social life (as a way of life). Having it in sight, this research examines the work of Raymond Williams in one approach still little explored by the bibliography: namely, as a project dedicated to the understanding of the modern society and the historical process (social and cultural) that originated it. For this, we intend to rebuild the links between William"s work and those which, regarding the culture and modern society, were his major formative influences: sociology, marxism and English cultural critique.Therewith, we not intend to ignore one that is the core of his work - his teory of culture. It is, rather, to requalify the position it occupies on the set of his work, to understand his critique of culture as part of a broader critique of modernity and to highlight the original interpretation of the modern world that Williams gives to us, relying on the interpretative schemes, those legacies of that three intelectual traditions. | |
