Abstract In this project, we will investigate wave-particle interaction using the traveling wave tube (TWT) of the PIIM laboratory of Aix-Marseille University. In the TWT, an electron beam is confined by an axial magnetic field and it moves under the action of electrostatic waves. The characteristics of the device allow us to control the parameters of the electron beam and of the electrostatic waves, which makes the TWT an ideal device to study wave-particle interaction. From the experiments performed in the TWT, we will be able to analyze several characteristics of wave-particle interaction, especially the chaotic dynamics of the electrons of the beam and the control of chaos. A system similar to the TWT has been studied on a theoretical basis in the research project related to this request. As part of the contribution between São Paulo and Aix-Marseille Universities, we will check experimentally the validity of our theoretical results obtained for particle beams moving under the combined action of magnetic fields and electrostatic waves.
