Abstract Medication non-adherence among diabetic patients may represent a health risk and have implications for the quality of life. This study aims to identify, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, beliefs, and psychosocial determinants of adherence to oral antidiabetic agents. The subjects will be patients with type 2 diabetes using oral antidiabetic agents, in outpatient care at a university hospital. This is a longitudinal study comprising of two phases of data collections. First phase: it will be elicited salient beliefs (attitudinal, normative, of control, self-efficacy and perceived risk) related to the use of oral antidiabetic agents, through semi-structured interview technique, which will be recorded, transcribed and submitted to content analyze. Second phase: it will be identified psychosocial factors associated with medication adherence behavior: Intention (Int), Attitude (At), Subjective Norm (SN), Perceived Behavior Control (PBC), Self-efficacy (SE) and Perceived Risk (PR), through the application of an instrument constructed based on the beliefs raised in the first phase and submitted to validity and reliability tests. The medication adherence will be measured by the proportion of adherence and its overall assessment. The data will be submitted to descriptive statistical analysis, reliability testing (internal consistency), correlation between the psychosocial variables (At, SN, PBC, SE, PR and Int) and Behavior; and linear regression to test the capacity of the variables in predicting intention and behavior.
