Influence of landscape parameters on the occurrence of primates and density of Callicebus nigrifrons in the Northeast of São Paulo State

Abstract

The expansion of human activities has resulted in a process of landscape fragmentation, reducing vegetation cover and threatening the biodiversity. This process can cause loss of habitat, reduction in resources, isolation of populations and density decrease of the most sensitive species. The landscape alteration is one of the main threats to primates, which according to their biological characteristics present different responses to these changes. In São Paulo State, Alouatta caraya, Sapajus nigritus, Callicebus nigrifrons, and Callithrix penicillata occur in sympatry, providing a good place to study the influence of the landscape characteristics in the occurrence of these species. For this, we will survey 16 fragments using playbacks of vocalizations of each species to find them. In addition, we will scan the fragments with C. nigrifrons occurrence to determine its density. These variables will be related to the characteristics of landscape structure (e.g. distances between fragments and other units of the landscape) and composition (e.g. size and shape of the fragments) which will be obtained by geoprocessing tools. We want to identify landscape characteristics that allow the primate community persistence and that influence the density of C. nigrifrons, so we will be able discuss how they deal with the change of landscape.
