Abstract

A large number of teens look for learning and professional qualification to enter the labor market while they are still in high school. Former studies supported by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa - FAPESP (grant number 2011/00029-3 and grant number 2008/51661-9) reported difficulties faced by apprentices and trainees to reconcile professional qualification, work and school. The main observed consequences are: reduction of time to study after or before school time, decreased school performance, partial reduction of sleep duration, fatigue, excessive sleepiness during the day and in the evening school hours, and a variety of health symptoms. Nowadays, professional qualification is available around the clock: besides the regular training/classes during day and evening hours (between 7 am and 11 pm), a number of courses are now offered during the night (between 11pm and 5 am). Little is known about the impact of studying after midnight on young people´s health, academic learning and professional qualification. This study aims to elucidate aspects of the new context as well as the challenges of young people entering the labor market in this 24-hour-society. It is paramount to discuss and create public awareness and public policies for youth at work, education and health. This study is planned to be conducted in the city of São Paulo, in two stages: a) Stage 1: people involved in youth professional qualification and learning processes will be interviewed. b) Stage 2: young students of a professional education program developed by a non-governmental organization will be invited to participate in the study. At the end of this study, we expect to be able to subsidize technical and scientific discussions about young people´s new work contexts, learning and professional training.
