Abstract

It is this project goal to study the manifestation of the tragic in the novel of the nineteenth century - period that is generically named Realism. The novels "Madame Bovary" (by Flaubert) and "Anna Kariênina" (by Tolstoi) are the specific objects of study of this project. This choice is justified because both the novels are products of what is called Realism,and also because of a theme they share: the feminine adultery, which, as we intend to demonstrate in our study, is responsible for the tragic structure of these novels. This tragic form is organized around the individual conflict and the ethical debate about the social system. These interpretations on the tragic come from two different views about what is tragedy: the view of the German idealistic philosophy, considered in our work under the perspective of Schelling, who enphasize the individual element, the affirmation of human freedom, and, on the other hand, the view of the structuralist studies on Greek Tragedy (made, especially, by Vernant, Vidal-Naquet, and Charles Segal). So, we intend to make an interpretation of the genre novel as a tragic form (taking in consideration the specific literary period we will study), interpreting its form and content through the two different views of tragic.
