Abstract

The project aims primarily to finish the critical edition of the complete poetry of the Portuguese humanist Antonio de Gouveia, with commentary, notes, and a translation to Portuguese. Gouveia's work was written entirely in Latin, in the sixteenth century. He belonged to the literary circle of Lyon, an important center of the French Renaissance, in the 1530s, where many writers lived, including names like Rabelais, Dolet, Visagier, Marot, Bourbon, Ducher, among others. In addition to the volumes Gouveia published during his lifetime, there are some manuscripts containing poems which should be consulted in order to complete the collection of his poetry and the critical and philological edition of the texts. The research shall be published in the Portugaliae Monumenta Neolatina series, from the University of Coimbra Press. Secondarily, I will research into the epigrammatic poetry composed by his contemporaries in France, Portugal, and Italy, cited in his poems, not only to consolidate the notes and commentary to the edition, but also to complement and to improve a course on classical and Renaissance epigrams, offered by the postgraduate program in Classical Literature (PPGLC/USP), to be given after my return from the period of research abroad, as well as to provide the basis and to enhance a new research project, on this same subject.
