Abstract The control of toughness of fiber reinforced concrete is usually carried out in prismatic specimens tested in bending. These tests are affected by a high number of factors that change the load-deflection response obtained in the assay and hence the evaluation of the toughness. Such factors may be related to the fiber itself, the matrix composition and test procedure, or can be induced in the production of the specimens, as it occurs with the fibers orientation. This project aims to evaluate a testing methodology for controlling toughness of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) through compression of notched specimens. This test allows the assessment of the toughness of specimens in two orthogonal directions, allowing the identification of the effect of fiber orientation in response to the test. It also allows evaluate the behavior of FRC on extracted cores. The specimens will be produced with two concrete mixtures with three contents of fibers in concrete. Two types of fibers (steel fiber and a polypropylene fibers) will be used in the experiment. The results of toughness obtained in compression tests of notched specimens will be compared to results obtained by flexural tests of prismatic specimens (ASTM 1609, 2006) and the double test cylinders punching (UNE 83515, 2010). It is expected to obtain a correlation between the responses of these different tests for different levels of residual strength capacity. (AU) | |
