Abstract

Solid waste management has become a challenging task to the municipal authorities for many reasons, some of them are the increasing waste quantity, with the urban population, the diverse content, the decreasing areas for landfills, and increasing conscience of environmental risks associated with the local waste management. That way, defining political actions requires using evaluation tools that quantify data clearly. Adopting indicators and indexes have been an important tool to spread information since they translate the complexity of integrated waste management from each city in terms of simple comprehension, expressed in only one number. This project, then, brings forward studying and reviewing a methodology that evolves the Waste Management Index, by Ferraz (2008). The methodology is based on the fuzzy sets theory, which incorporates naturally linguistics variables to the system, facilitating the variables' evaluation. The index considers data that come from four different dimensions: strategy, pick up and transportation, screening and treatment, and final destination looking for an integrated evaluation of the waste management from each city.(AU)
