Abstract

Lepstospirosis is an infectious disease of animal and public health importance. Little is known of its occurrence in wild animals. The present study aims to search for antibodies against Leptospira spp. in sera samples of several species of wild animals and, therefore, indicate the level of exposure of these animals. Sera samples of 269 animals will be used, belonging to Mammalia class, comprehending 46 species. Samples were collected during the clinical examination performed by the Wildlife Research and Medical Center (CEMPAS, UNESP - Botucatu) from 2008 to 2012, and stored at -20°C. The Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) will be performed to antibody detection, using a battery of 30 antigens (25 serovars, 4 serovariants of Hardjo serovar and a strain isolated from a dog in Botucatu city, named BTU-1) maintained and replicated weekly in EMJH media at 27°C. Animals with titer equal to or higher than 100 will be considered positive. The Qui-Square Test will be applied to compare the MAT results with different biological characteristics of each animal, such as species, family, provenience (captivity or free ranging) and diet (carnivore, herbivore, omnivore and insectivore).
