Abstract

Historiographical knowledge about women's participation in the educational scene gets focus in contemporary debates. However, there are few studies that take into account the possible contributions of religious women, single or married, in this discussion. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the presence of females in the Presbyterian education project implemented in Brazil from the late nineteenth century. For this, we analyzed primary sources of an official nature, such as minutes and educational reports and non-official documents in the format of personal letters written by the American missionary and educator Mary Dascomb during the creation of the American School of Curitiba between the years 1892-1917. Through surveys guided by the theoretical perspective of Cultural and Gender History, we intend to bring up discussions about the construction processes of the symbolic mechanisms of power driven by religious discourse in the standardization process of the female gender, and about possible forms of transgression of the socially expected role of unmarried women. Therefore, we will analyze the influence or not, of the North American Presbyterian educational model in the construction of the Brazilian society of the time, especially with regard to the role of women in education, at home and in religion.
