Abstract The project aims at investigating on what grounds the writing of Brazilian national history in the nineteenth-century was based, understanding the literary press, which began to become more prominent as a privileged space of production and dissemination of knowledge in the 1830s and 1840s. Exploring the essay, that was the main form of writing of the men of letters of the period, the research will try to identify political, social, economic or cultural projects and representations in the texts of these authors. Therefore, were selected some magazines (produced within and outside Brazil, between 1829 and 1851) in which a historiographical discourse takes shape and stands out. So it will be possible to measure the importance of the essayist writing for the national production and evaluate from which utopias the Brazilian identity and the ideal of a nation of that period were constructed.
