Abstract

The availability of translations and studies on authors living during the last centuries of the Western Roman Empire are hitherto, in portuguese, quite scarce. So as to fill this as of yet empty space, we aim in this project to translate and analyse the correspondence between Saint Augustine and Saint Jerome, a dialogue in letters spanning from 394 to 419. We shall study this corpus in a double analytical path: studying the epistolary genre alongside the historical changes in the period, using both ancient authors on rhetoric (Caius Julius Victor, Pseudo-Libanius, Pseudo-Demetrius) and letter-writing (Cicero, Seneca, Pliny the Younger) and historiographical works, be it ancient (Orose, Eusebius of Caesarea), classical (Edward Gibbon) and mostly contemporary (Peter Brown).
