Abstract

This paper fits into discussions about the design of proposals for intervention in urban space, linked to political projects aspiring education (civics) of the citizen, and has as its subject analysis the confluences between educational ideas and projections/urban projects in the first decades of the twentieth century. The goal of research is to understand how some educational ideas were based and guided projects of moralization of urban space proposed for the city of Rio de Janeiro, which were suggested by engineers who founded and/or were part of the board of the Brazilian Association of Education (BAE), between 1920 and 1930. The educational concepts, developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, are primarily related to adaptation of individuals focused on a context of intense urban transformations. This ideology has spread in Brazil by means of intellectual production of members of the School movement, which among other proposals, understood the city as a space of intervention in order to achieve an educational project for the "people". The analysis favors as sources the intellectual productions of the engineers of the BAE published, particularly the Bulletin of the Brazilian Association of Education and the Education Journals, New School, and Schola. I seek an interdisciplinary approach in order to understand how these educational concepts were based proposals of intervention in the city, conceived as the political place of education of the citizen.
