Abstract

The division of Eumaeini in sections has significantly contributed to the classification of a family with many taxonomic problems. However, many studies are necessary to be conducted to understand the phylogenetic relationships of genera and species. Furthermore, the reconstruction of biological relevant characters (eg. Secondary sex organs) in an evolutionary context is important for the understanding of speciation processes contributing to the significant diversity of the group. Thus, the main objective of this project is to establish a stable classification of "Atlides Section", inferring phylogenetic relationships among genera and species that belong to the section. For a systematic and phylogenetic study of "Atlides Section" using morphological characters it is essential to analyze specimens of all species that belong to the four genera of the section. Visits to collections are necessary to collect data for the species that are not deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo (MZUSP). The National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution has one of the largest collections of Lepidoptera in the world and possesses representative series of the species of "Atlides Section." Preterit and current collaborations established with the Smithsonian Institution allow us the opportunity to use the specimens deposited there with the expectation of obtaining indispensable results for the proposed study.
