Abstract

The evolution of regions of gene regulation, particularly of genes expressed during embryonic development, appears to be directly related to evolutionary processes resulting in the origin of new morphologies, since variations in regulatory regions determine changes in gene expression patterns during formation specific structures. The postdoctoral project linked to this proposal aims to investigate associations between the nucleotide sequence of the regulatory region CsB, which controls the expression of genes closest to the 5' end of the HoxD cluster (i.e. Hoxd11 and Hoxd13) during the formation of the bud of paired appendices in vertebrates. It will be studied condrictes species representing most of the morphological variation of the fins of the major clades (i.e. Squalomorphi and Galeomorphi) and compared with representatives of major groups of Actinopterygii. Therefore, the ideal progress of this project depends on obtaining taxa representing such morphological diversity, as well as to provide tissues for molecular studies as specified in postdoctoral project. This proposal is made on the request of the "Bolsa de Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior" (BEPE) to carry out the research stage at the institution "National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium" (NMMBA), Checheng, Taiwan. Eventually, fish collections in Japan, such as Fish Collection of Hokkaido University, could be visited in order to provide further sampling. I also plan to attend the 9th Indo-Pacific Fishes Congress in Okinawa, also in Japan, in which we will be presenting a poster. (AU)
