Abstract

In this research traineeship program the Ph.D. candidate Cesar Monzu Freire intends to expand his knowledge in engineering research tools, such as computational fluid dynamics, to study the flow around a cylinder fitted with vortex-induced vibrations suppessor known as helical strake. The computational research will be guided by Professor Dr. Vassilis Theofilis, from Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain. In parallel to its computational study, the studend also wants to get in contact to a variation of a flow visualization technique known as particle image velocimetry. This contact will be made by Professor Dr. Julio Soria, from Monash University, who is a specialist in holographic particle image velocimetry. Currently, Professor Dr. Julio Soria is at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the same university in which the student Cesar Freire Monzu will hold his traineeship. Besides knowing internationally renowned researchers and learn how research is conducted in other countries, the student will participate in two international conferences and will outline the work that he is currently developing in his Ph.D. project. The student will present papers at the conference OMAE2013, which will be held in the city of Nantes / France, and in conference CFM2013, which will be held in Prato/Italy. (AU)
