Abstract

In the last years, an intense research effort has been made to develop new structural alloys and to optimize the alloys commercially available, which could withstand the demanding operational conditions at high temperatures. A substantial part of these research activities has been dedicated to titanium alloys. However, the high reactivity with oxygen and poor resistance to wear contribute to reduction in creep life. In this context, the objective will be to continue the studies with Ti6Al4V. These studies were initiated in 2001 and had a major breakthrough with a research project supported by FAPESP (proc. 2007/54987-0) during the period from 12/01/07 to 06/30/10. The excellent results obtained by surface treatments on creep resistance of this alloy motivated this new research. In this work, the effect of TiN PVD coating on creep behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy will be evaluated. The studies will be complemented with microstructural analysis and characterization of surface coating using the techniques of X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy and microhardness measurements.
