Abstract

The development of processes for the use of lignocellulosic materials is still a great challenge nowadays. In order to convert biomass to biofuels or other chemicals the hydrolysis must occur with high yields. Although enzymatic hydrolysis has some significant advantages, its use is limited by the high costs associated to the production of the cellulolytic complex. In order to make the second generation ethanol production viable it is essential to improve enzymes production. The minimization of the production costs involves the screening of microorganisms capable of high production of the essential enzymes, as well as the optimization of the production in large scale. This requires that mathematical models are available to enable the understanding of the phenomena and to be used to optimization and process scale-up. The objective of this work is to study the mathematical modeling of the production of cellulases by filamentous fungi. To accomplish this task, experimental assays will be performed, a mathematical model will be proposed and the kinetic parameters will be estimated using non-linear estimation techniques.
