Abstract

The safe and economical off-shore exploration and production of oil in pre-salt layers depend on the development of materials that withstand the harsh conditions encountered in this especific applications throughout their life cycle. In this context the drilling risers and tool conections undergo severe conditions of employment. Stainless steels, such as supermartensitic, duplex and superduplex classes exhibit corrosion resistance and mechanical properties suitable for this application;however, these materials have low wear resistance. Recent developments of our research team at DEMa-UFSCar has shown that the addition of boron to the composition of stainless steels promotes the formation of borides, which strongly increase the wear resistance of these materials. The proposed Ph.D project aims at the production of bimetallic pipes using supermartensitic stainless steel reinforced with borides in its inner counterface, and the study of the microstructure and the wear resistance.
