Abstract

Mitochondrial autophagy is one of the main processes that influence damage in ischemia/reperfusion. We have previously shown that bicarbonate increases ischemia/reperfusion injury and now hypothesize that the presence of bicarbonate may modulate mitochondrial autophagy by altering either the internal pH of the lysosome and/or the cell autophagy capacity leading to an increase in damaged mitochondria, which could increase ROS release and injury.
