Abstract

Spin liquids and topological insulators are examples of phases described by a nontrivial ground state without spontaneous symmetry breaking. Recent theoretical and experimental results have raised interest in strongly correlated topological phases. An interesting possibility is that topological Mott insulators represent a route to discover new kinds of spin liquids. In this project we propose to investigate lattice models for interacting electrons which may exhibit topological phases, by applying analytical techniques based on fractional excitations for spin liquids and Mott insulators, along with numerical techniques applicable to this problem, such as variational Monte Carlo.
