Abstract

The project provides for the application of molecular phylogenetic Section setacea of the genus Batrachospermum associated with morphological characterization using the criteria usually applied, as well as others eventually proposed. Based on information currently available (morphological and molecular) worldwide representatives on the order Batrachospermales setacea section and, in particular, the following general hypotheses can be tested: 1) the section of the genus setacea Batrachospermum constitute a monophyletic group within the order Batrachospermales , the recognition of this group associated with the fact Batrachospermum be paraphyletic, will result in the elevation of this section to the genus level, 2) the species currently recognized in the section based on morphological characters are corroborated by molecular data, in addition to these species, others (particularly species cryptic) should be found and recognized as distinct species within these groups. To test these hypotheses proposes the following objectives: 1) to infer phylogenetic relationships of section setacea with the other groups (genera and sections) Batrachospermales order, as well as the limits of inter-specific variation of species within the section, based in the analysis of gene sequences rbcL and the region "barcode" gene cox 1, 2) elaborate study revisionário to section setacea through reevaluation of diagnostic taxonomic characters for species of this group, in the light of new molecular data. The proposed project presents issues of great importance, namely: 1) it is a work of systematically involving extensive morphological and molecular study of a representative group of continental rhodophyta to various regions of the globe, 2) provide valuable information for comparative analyzes of systematic and phylogeny of continental rhodophyta, especially the order Batrachospermales, 3) provide further information on current approaches to biodiversity of macroalgae continental as well as the potential for application in the areas of conservation and biomonitoring in aquatic environments. The revised section setacea represent substantial scientific contribution to the systematic of this group of red algae. (AU)
