Abstract About 30% of patients with focal epilepsy have epileptic seizures refractory to antiepileptic drugs and for them the best treatment is the surgical removal of the ictal onset zone. The preoperative evaluation of patients with focal refractory epilepsy is a procedure that requires high financial resources and that may involve significant risk of morbidity if invasive procedures are necessary. Moreover, even with detailed preoperative assessment, prognosis of seizure control in the long term after surgery is very heterogeneous, with over 50% of individuals with seizure recurrence after 10 years. Concomitant use of electroencephalogram associated with functional magnetic resonance imaging (EEG-fMRI) allows noninvasive evaluation of simultaneous neuronal activity and cerebral hemodynamics. This technique can be an effective and less costly alternative for determining the ictal onset zone in individuals with focal refractory epilepsies. EEG-fMRI is being used today in research on epilepsy. The aim of this study is to evaluate the contribution of the technique of EEG-fMRI in the preoperative evaluation of patients with focal refractory epilepsies. | |
