Prescription potentially inappropriate drugs for elderly patients in Internal Medicine Ward

Abstract

Elderly patients are affected by various disease need more use of several drugs (medications) continuously and concurrently. The use of most drugs was independent factor associated with an increased risk for adverse drug event (ADE).Instruments in order to detect potential risks of drug iatrogeny with potentially inappropriate medications prescription (PIMP) in the elderly were developed, being more used the de Beers-Fick, updated in 2012. It is necessary to know the prescription medication in the elderly hospitalized for improvement of the assistance. This research aims to assess the potentially inappropriate prescription drug prescribed for elderly people in the internal medicine ward (IMW) of the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu-Unesp.162 hospitalized patients will be assessed on IMW, with analysis of the first prescription. The prescription will be sought from the computerized hospital prescription. The medication will be classified as for pharmacological group and in the categories proposed by AGS to PIMP: a) should be avoided; b) should be avoided when certain diseases and syndromes; c) to be used with caution. Descriptive analysis will be conducted building, for the quantitative variables, tables with averages and standard deviation, if normal distribution, or 25 and 75 percentile and median, if not normal distribution. For the qualitative variables will also prepare tables with the distributions of frequencies and percentages. (AU)
