Abstract

Tidal turbines can be arranged in offshore farms to generate clean energy from tidal currents. An array of turbines may suffer from flow interference effects that can reduce the hydrodynamic efficiency of the individual system and the whole arrangement. Numerical and theoretical models try to account for such complex interactions, but they require experimental validation in order to be turned into useful design tools. In one hand, the Tidal Energy Research Group from the University of Oxford, UK, is a leading research group with considerable experience in tidal turbine modelling. In the other, the NDF - Núcleo de Dinâmica e Fluidos from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, is experienced in experimental analysis. Combining specialties from both groups we intend to design paradigm experiments to be employed in the validation of numerical and theoretical models and evaluate the efficiency of tidal turbine arrays.
