Abstract

Yttrium-doped barium zirconate (BZY) polycrystalline ceramics with perovskite structure have technological importance as solid electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells operating at intermediate temperatures (500-700 C). The issues related to both nanoparticle agglomeration and consequent low final densification are yet unsolved problems. Our idea to solve these problems is to carry out a detailed evaluation of the pattern of the nanoparticle surfaces, namely, the character and the function of the chemical species attached to these surfaces. These species are known to hinder the interaction among the nanoparticles. The experimental analysis of the surface and interface energies of BZY nanoparticles by drop solution calorimetry combined with water adsorption calorimetry (available at the laboratories of Prof. Navrotsky - a pioneer in this research area - at the University of California at Davis) might give a significant contribution to this study. The collected data shall give insights to make advancements in understanding the difficulties found for sintering these perovskites. (AU)
