Abstract

The proposition for this study is to elaborate the potential surface runoff chart over the Rio da Paciência (MA), Brazil, watershed. That 153 km³ watershed complies four counties of the São Luís in the Ilha do Maranhão: São Luís, São José de Ribamar, Paço do Lumiar e Raposa. The field work will accomplished in a partnership with the Laboratory of Watershed Studies (LEBAC) at the Federal University of Maranhão. In the elaboration of the runoff chart it will be used the Geotechnical Cartography method, as in Zuquette (1993) and in Zuquette and Gandolfi (2004), trying to evaluate and characterize the physical environment variables associated with different land uses. In this kind of method the geotechnical characteristics related to geology, such as soil types (texture, morphology, permeability), drainage density, declivity and features that improve surface water storage (depressions, little pools and lakes), are grouped in classes and values are assigned. The final product will be the result from crossing natural and social attributes by using ArcGis software (version 10) in a Geographical Information System environment. This information will help environmental planning of the land use in the watershed and it is an important document to a future project of geographical space ordering. (AU)
