Abstract

During the years 1964 to 1984, Brazil lived under military regime, a period marked by strong repression, violence, torture, murder and inequality. At this stage, mainly between the years 1969 and 1974, there was intense censorship of the media and the government has invested massively in spreading the "economic miracle" and nationalist themes as a way to manipulate the population. Santos Filho (2008) affirms that the Brazilian Tourism Company - EMBRATUR was used by the military to promote a positive image of the country abroad, since the accusations of repression and violence could harm them. This disclosure was made through stereotypes, hurting tourism, as is the case of sex tourism. There are few literatures which pass through three themes: the military dictatorship, image and tourist stereotypes. This research project aimed to investigate whether the stereotypes used abroad were also used internally as a way of promoting the ideology proposed by the military resulting in greater control of the population. The methodology proposed is the French Discourse Analysis for understanding the meaning of the text and how it articulates with the history and society. It will be done the survey of 366 editions of the Brazilian magazine called Veja where will be cataloged ads, covers, and materials that will give an overview of the period. Subsequently will be considered the materials the most relevant for each of five predetermined stereotypes. Veja magazine will be the object of analysis in this work due to its national reach and the notorious military intervention during the years of dictatorship. It is believed that the new approach, relevance and historical significance of the subject justify the development of the proposed work. (AU)
