Abstract The analysis of the Brazilian cinema costumes comes from the building of the cultural imaginary character in relation to the figure of the peasant in the discursive visuality of the cinema from the literary matrix. This analysis is intended to investigate until what point the costumes visuality reconstructs character in the cinema, since the costumes that wears (or unwears) the literary persona and the cinematic constitute like symbolic elements in the communication system. For this research to have revealing readings, it will be guided by some interpretations, including the philosophical vision of Pierre Bourdieu on the power contained in the words and symbolic dimensions of social life, including the costume seemed as a key construction element of characters identity, that can be the expression of sexuality, identification with a social class or even with the power. The reading of costumes permeates the context of the times and the situation portrayed when the movie happened, through analysis of Graciliano Ramos work, Vidas Secas (1938) and the eponymous film by Nelson Pereira dos Santos (1963), Os Sertões (1902), by Euclides da Cunha and the transpositions for the language of cinema in Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol (1964), Glauber Rocha, with costumes by Paul Gil Soares and Guerra de Canudos (1997), by Sergio Rezende, with costumes by Beth Filipecki. These shreds were elect in order to enable visual interpretation among the three films above as the aesthetic design of the directors listed, considering the literary narrative sense.
