Abstract

Annatto (Bixa orellana L.) is a tropical crop indigenous to America, probably to the Amazon region. This species receives great attention due to the natural red and yellow dyes, extracted from its seeds used in the pharmaceutical, textile, dairy, food, beverage, paints and cosmetics industries. These dyes extracted from annatto are among the few allowed by the World Health Organization (WHO), because they are not toxic and do not alter food taste. Although annatto is an important source of natural dyes, there is almost no research assessing the genetic variability within this species and investigating how this variability is distributed in the Brazilian territory. In our study, we aimed to characterize the level and distribution of genetic diversity of local varieties of annatto collected in the Brazilian Amazon and Central Brazil. The data obtained will allow us to detect possible diversity centers or the center of domestication of this species, and also how the genetic diversity of this crop is structured. In addition, we aim to determine the species reproductive system through progeny tests using microsatellite markers, studying the mating system at the hierarchical level of fruits and individuals from wild and cultivated populations of annatto. We aim to verify whether there are differences regarding the reproduction mode among wild and cultivated populations. The data obtained in this project aims to contribute to breeding programs of annatto in Brazil. (AU)
