Abstract

The political edition had an important impact in Brazil and Portugal in the final period of their dictatorships during the 1970s. This research project aims to analyze, in a comparative approach, the role of publishers in charge of six publishing houses, three from each country. These publishers connected directly their editorial work with a political engagement. An editorial work with political intentions of social intervention is the mean feature of what is called political edition. The research has two main goals: a) to analyze how the editorial action of these publishers merged with their oppositional political engagement, turning their publishing houses in important spaces for the opposition against the dictatorships; b) from the experience of these publishers, I intend to examine comparatively the features of the political edition in both countries, aiming to identify common and specific aspects. The first goal will allow the understanding of the synthesis between politics and edition in both cases, as well as the relations and mediations that were necessary for this synthesis. The second goal will allow a consideration about the role that the political edition had in Brazil and Portugal, aiming a broad appreciation of its meaning in both contexts.I intend to examine the catalogues of these publish houses both quantitatively and qualitatively, by selecting a number of books to specific analyses. The press of that period will be another precious source (news about the publishers and the books). In addition, I will explore documents about the publishing houses and their publishers located in the political repression state organizations archives in Brazil and Portugal. Finally I expect to conduct interviews with the selected publishers in both countries, providing me more analytical elements for a comparative study of the political edition.Key-words: Political edition, Editorial History in Brazil and Portugal, History of the Book in Brasil and Portugal
