Abstract

The Mazama genus is a great diversity group among the Cervidae family and five species of it can be found in Brazil. The ecological characteristics of the genre, adapted to closed forest environments, are the main reason why the knowledge about the natural history of the taxa is so scarce. As a result of this shortage, the IUCN classifies three species of the genus as Data Deficient, and five other species are classified within the categories of Threat. In this context, the development of alternative methodologies that enable the information gathering of that group becomes essential. Obtaining DNA from stool samples showed recently a noninvasive possibility with wide application for ecology studies involving rare or elusive species. However, it can still be considered an underused methodology which sampling techniques and possible biases require more understanding. In this sense, this work aims to compare information regarding the spatial use of the brown brocket deer (M. gouazoubira) obtained from GPS collars and fecal DNA. Thus, six animals were monitored with GPS collar in the Nhecolândia Pantanal region for a period of one year within a defined study grid. Simultaneously, the grid was sampled monthly for feces with a scat detection dog. Those samples will have their species, sex and individual information genetically obtained. Such data will provide information about home range and habitat selection of the specie, as well as a comparison between the two methodologies used. (AU)
