Abstract

Increasing on domestic sewage production and more stringent regulations requires the use of treatment technologies for coping with an even more complex matrix of contaminants which has potential to cause health injuries and environmental degradation. For these reasons the obtention of high quality effluent should be prioritized, mainly when it is considered that treated effluent receiving water bodies are used for water supply. As an alternative for conventional wastewater treatment processes, Membrane Bioreactors and Attached Growth Moving Bed Membrane Bioreators, seems to be an interesting option, because they are able to remove organic matter, nitrogen and recalcitrant compounds with high efficiency. Although the technology is very promising, it still needs to be improved in order to prevent or reduce the loss of performance of the membranes, caused by a complex phenomenon called fouling. Different intervention forms have been proposed and developed for improving membranes performance and extending its life span, including pre-treatments, chemical cleaning procedures, and modification of membrane composition. A new approach applied for polymeric membranes modification is the addition of nanoclay during the synthesis process, such a practice would retard the formation of fouling. In this study the performance of modified ultrafiltration membranes, PVDF and PSf, will be evaluated using MBR and MB-MBR treatment systems. The evaluation will focus on the organic load removal and fouling occurrence, during the treatment of a domestic effluent arising from the student housing at the University of São Paulo São Paulo.
