Abstract

The historical sources regarding gymnastics societies founded by German immigrants in Brazil between the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century often reveal the circulation of certain precepts published by the Deutsche Turnerschaft (entity founded in 1860 aiming at gathering German gymnastics societies in Germany and other countries) in its official journal, the Deutsche Turnzeitung. Some German-Brazilian gymnastics societies were affiliated to the Deutsche Turnerschaft and the documents suggest that the ideals and prescriptions of this entity arrived in Brazil in two ways: by the reproduction of determined articles of the Deutsche Turnzeitung in magazines published by the Brazilian clubs as well as by copies of the Deutsche Turnzeitung itself. This research aims at surveying and analyzing this German gymnastics journal since 1856 (when its first issue was published) until the end of the 1930s (when German gymnastics societies in Brazil went through the nationalization process) trying to comprehend especially how these Brazilian societies were portrayed by the Deutsche Turnzeitung and, therefore, the Deutsche Turnerschaft.
