Abstract

This research project is about one of the architects of a modern Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century. Oscar Castello Branco Clark was an intellectual doctor who stared in a very own way the task of modernizing, reforming, civilizing Brazilian society. He was part of a generation of intellectuals who acted in educational areas of the country at a time of political and pedagogical changes that left their mark in our social thinking. Bearer of specialized knowledge, he turned to a group of questions related to the relationship between sick and healthy bodies to explain the impossibility of Brazil's growth as a nation. He believed that deep and permanent changes were needed, but easily resolved if we developed a set of practical medico-social institutions through school and preventive medicine.The way to achieve these changes that would put us on equal footing with "cutting-edge nations said," was for changing the health of our populations and it basically went through our educational system, unfolding in practices and institutions that would prevent Brazilians from diseases, would make them robust, Hellenistic Clark's words, would teach them a trade and eventually would make him a spokesperson for this new pedagogy of work and health in your family, changing your habits, precariousness moral and unhygienic conduct, positively influencing the whole of society.In his intellectual trajectory and man of action, implemented in the city of Rio de Janeiro and in the former Fluminense territory of medical educational institutions (Schools and Clinics, Hospitals Schools) which, according to its design, effectively alter the state of health and education a strategic part of our society: childhood.
