Abstract

The extraction of information through the use of satellite images is of great importance to many areas of knowledge such as: Remote Sensing, Medicine, Biology, Materials Engineering, among others. Among the various tools of image processing, the Mathematical Morphology (MM) has been widely used to assist the process of feature extraction. Its use should be the great potential of this tool in quantifying shape and size of the objects to be extracted. The MM was prepared initially by Matheron (1975) and SAW (1982) and consists of quantitatively describing geometric structures present in the image by a process of erosion and dilation. However, these systems work by coupling libraries or Toolbox, thus presenting some deficiencies that make its use restricted. Can mention the limitation of many systems in processing tests with large areas, and other deficiency is that for each image type new routines should be implemented. The biggest problem is that the vast majority of software, packages, libraries or toolkits for morphological processing of images are particular domain, restricting access to users. Thus, this project aims to continue the development of public domain software CARTOMORPH specifically module preprocessing pictures CARTOMORPH for application in the field of cartography.
