Abstract

Violence against women is still a serious national problem, despite all the efforts made by the Brazilian Government in the last decade to confront this type of violence. The enactment of the Maria da Penha Law, in 2006, represented a major breakthrough in legal protection in cases of domestic violence. However, the thorough implementation of the Maria da Penha Law is subject to the existence of the "Specialized Support Services to Women" (in particular to the Courts of Domestic and Familiar Violence Against Women), and the scope of these services in municipalities is still limited. Given that, the aim of this project is to analyze the change caused by the Maria da Penha Law, verifying the effect of "Specialized Support Services to Women" on violence against women in Brazil. In our analysis, we are going to use the data on aggressions against women provided by the Ministry of Health (DATASUS) and the data from the "Women´s Policy Secretariat" on the distribution of the specialized services in Brazilian municipalities. Another aim of this work is to fill the gap in national studies in the area of Economics on the topic of domestic violence, reviewing the international literature on the topic and checking its applicability in the national context.
