Abstract

Very little is known on the processes of coastal upwelling and South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) intrusion onto the continental shelf in the Espírito Santo Basin (18°S-22°S). Studies on the basic characteristics of these processes and their underlying dynamics are scarce, especially in comparison to the better-studied region of Cape Frio (23°S). In this research project, we propose an investigation of the roles of the Brazil Current and its mesoscale eddy field in the aforementioned coastal processes. The continental shelf is narrow, and the bottom topography is remarkably complex. The primary aim of this work is to examine the role of the mean Brazil Current jet and the recurrent Vitória Eddy in the dynamics linked to the processes of coastal upwelling and SACW intrusion. An approach based on in situ/satellite data analysis and tridimensional, process-oriented numerical experiments is proposed. We expect to describe the coastal upwelling phenomenon in the vicinities of Vitória (20°S-22°S), as well as the pathways of intrusion of SACW onto the continental shelf. Further, we expect to quantify the individual effects of the wind stress forcing, the mean Brazil Current and the Vitória Eddy on the dynamics of the upwelling and intrusion processes.
