Abstract

This work aims to investigate recreational venues in São Paulo (parties, bars and nightclubs) which use to be related to "alternative" sexualities in order to observe the trajectories of their attenders, their representations about their practices, and their ways of appropriation of what certain public discourses conventionally label as "gay world", or "gay culture". I firstly intend to research places that do not fit into the more or less established standard set of "GLS" venues, such as pop music parties attended by boys and girls younger than the average age group of gay clubs; and parties and nightclubs whose public is not distinguished by a defined sexual orientation, but mainly by esthetic criteria such as music style, fashion and art, among others. The purpose is to focus on processes of construction and de-construction of difference and on transits through categories and identities, in order to escape from the dichotomous and rigid frames about sexual subcultures. Recent unfoldings in the so-called gay night culture seem to reveal changings in the models of sociability and in the social experience of homosexualities and diverging sexualities in general.
