Abstract

This proposal, first for the region to be studied, aims to assess biodiversity and spatial and temporal organization of diatoms in different compartments (periphytic habitats, planktonic and surface sediments) due to the trophic state in three reservoirs placed in the South Coast basin region (Barra, Jurupará e Cachoeira do França) and three reservoirs in the Alto Paranapanema basin (Pilão D'Água, Itapetininga and Paineiras) in the state of São Paulo. The project aims to integrate information on physical, chemical and biological characteristics of water and recent sediment, provide data on the autoecology of diatoms in tropical reservoirs and contribute to the characterization of the ecological quality of these systems. Therefore, samples of phytoplankton and periphyton (when present) will be collected in two seasons of the year (rainy and dry) and sediment samples will be sampled once because of its depositional character and integrated timescale. Sampling shall be accompanied by physical and chemical analysis of the water (temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, transparency, dissolved oxygen, dissolved inorganic carbon, series N and P, soluble reactive silica, chlorophyll-a) and sediment (NT and PT, total organic carbon and particle size). Diatoms are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The data will be analyzed by means of multivariate statistical analyzes. The proposal will subsidize a larger project, providing information on diatoms' biodiversity and autoecology aiming at the development of a regional database on metropolitan region of Sao Paulo (MRSP) diatoms and future application in transfer function diatom- phosphorus model.
