Abstract

The current epidemiological reality of tuberculosis (TB) in Brazil and in the world appoint to the requirement of research focused in sociocultural aspects involved to the cure and its rehabilitation. Given the lack of tools available in portuguese to measure stigma that yet reaches TB patients, this study to aim at culturally adapt and validate in Brazil the of Tuberculosis-related stigma scale. The scale was developed and validated in Southern Thailand, aimed to measure stigma associated with tuberculosis, to determine the factors underlying such stigma, identify points of intervention, and evaluate the effects of stigma reduction programs. The scale has 23 items answer type Likert that were selected from the following key domains: fear of transmission and disease, values and attitudes associated with shame, blame, judgment and disclosure of disease status. The validation process in our country it will adopt two important fronts work: steps of translation-back translation, semantic evaluation and pilot test, denominated Phase I and Phase II, since it is intended to obtain the possible confirmation of the initial psychometric properties. The study count with a sample of patients with TB, treated in referral centers in the municipality, with age 18 years or more. Phase I, will performed the descriptive analysis with calculation of frequency and proportion, average and standard deviation. In addition to checking the existence "floor" and "ceiling" effects, convergent validity and discriminant validity, according to the the multitrait-multimethod analysis. In the Phase II, will use Confirmatory Factor Analysis, considering of factor loadings tests and adjustment measures: Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA); Goodness-of-fit index (GFI); Normal Fit Index (NFI); Nonnormed Fit Index (NNFI). Regarding to scale confiability, the authors will consider the Cronbach's alpha, adopting as acceptable values higher than 0,70, and also the variance extracted of factors, having as reference, values higher than 50%. After completing the process of validation in the county, the scale will become available to Brazilian researchers to measure stigma and to compare of other cultures, contributing with changing practices directed to TB patients.
