Abstract

The aquatic macroinvertebrates have been traditionally studied in the description of structural and functional aspects of lotic aquatic ecosystems. The benthic organisms had an important functional role in aquatic ecosystems, since they take part in the process of organic matter decomposition, nutrient dynamics and energy flow. The benthic fauna is quite diverse and, the distribution pattern of this community may be affected by various environmental factors. This study aims: 1) to examine during the two seasons of the year (dry and rainy seasons) the spatial variation of benthic community structure in the mouth region of the Guareí river into the Paranapanema river, at upstream zone of Jurumirim reservoir (São Paulo, Brazil); 2) to identify the variability on the composition and abundance of benthic community at micro-spatial scales (along the river, at transition zone between the two rivers, at the marginal wetland) and 3) to determine the environmental factors that control the spatial and temporal distribution of benthic community. The sediment samplings will be carried out during the dry (September 2013) and rainy seasons (February 2014) in eight sampling stations distributed in the transition zone of Guareí River, flowing into Paranapanema river. In each sampling site, three sediment replicates will be collected for analysis of benthic macroinvertebrates and for the determination of sediment characteristics, totaling 32 samples in each study period. Environmental variables will be analyzed and, will involve the physical and chemical aspects of water and sediment, as the particle size distribution and the percentage of organic matter. The biological parameters of community structure (density and richness) will be determined for each sediment sample and, a comparison between sites and seasons will be carried out. (AU)
