Abstract

In this project we propose the application of electro-oxidative processes in the elimination of herbicides used in rice culture. These products are undesirable in water due to its high pollution potential and toxicity, which can lead to cancer development and endocrine desregulation. Among the technologies used for wastewater treatment, most are not efficient in removing these contaminants, and they are expensive, require large areas to implement and difficult to automate. The goal of this research is to assess the improvement of existing materials electrodic, coupled processes such as light irradiation and ultrasound, Fenton reactions and applies them in the oxidation of these contaminants. To achieve this goal, taking into account the excellent properties of the anodes of boron-doped diamond for example i) high conductivity, ii) physical and electrochemically stability and iii) wide electrochemical window, it will be emploied in the electrooxidation of herbicides. Furthermore, will be evaluated new gas diffusion electrode modified with metals like niobium, tantalum and molybdenum, among others, the generation of peroxide and the oxidation efficiency of these contaminants. With this modification is expected to increase peroxide generation, and decrease the potential of the cell. Due to limitations of some processes electrodic, this work will investigate the coupled processes such as ultrasonic irradiation or irradiation of light taking into account the ability to break existing bonds in organic compounds and to generate radicals of the high oxidizing power. Another process that will be studied is the conjugation of the reactions of Fenton, photo-Fenton and electro-Fenton with electrodes prepared earlier to increase efficiency and minimize costs in the oxidation of herbicides.
