Abstract

Monoterpenes are an important class of natural products with intense flavor and odor and exhibit biological activity. It is related their applications in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries. However, they are lipophilic substances, volatile and exhibit certain chemical instability. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are macrocyclic compounds capable of complexing, increase the water solubility and stabilize a wide range of substances and that, currently, have been the subject of research and development of new products in pharmaceutical industry. Thus, this project aims to research a comparative study of complexation of individual monoterpenes beta myrcene, citral, limonene and 1,8-cineole in beta-cyclodextrin (B-CD) and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-B-CD ), proceeding preparation, physicochemical characterization and in vitro biological evaluation of monoterpene-cyclodextrin formulations. At the same time, this project aims to prepare a formulation of a mouthrinse containing the most promissing monoterpene alone and encapsulated on CD and evaluate the effect of the formulation and the control samples on the growth and adherence of Streptococcus mutans (ATCC25175) in solid surface dental enamel and cane sterile glass beyond the formation of bacterial biofilms in vitro.
